UK requirements depend on the application route. A paper application needs two identical 35×45mm printed photos. An online application can use a digital photo code from a participating booth or shop, or a photo taken with your own device and uploaded through GOV.UK.
For an own-device upload, HM Passport Office requires a colour photo at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels high, between 50 KB and 10 MB, against a plain light-coloured background. Do not crop the image before uploading: the online application provides the crop.
The image must be clear, in focus, unaltered, and show a neutral expression with no shadows on the face or background. PhotoPass checks the published minimum dimensions and file size but does not inspect framing or any other visual requirement. The official GOV.UK application remains the final acceptance check.
