Common reasons Canada Passport photos get rejected

Avoid these mistakes to make sure your photo is accepted first time.

  • Photo not taken by a commercial photographer — Canada requires all passport photos, including digital uploads for online renewal, to be taken in person by a commercial photographer or photo studio. The photographer must provide their name, address, and the date taken. Home-taken photos are not accepted.
  • Wrong dimensions — Canada uses portrait format (50×70 mm, approximately 2×2¾ inches), not the square US-style 2×2 inch photo. Using the wrong format is the most common mistake.
  • Head height outside 31–36 mm — your head from chin to crown must measure 31–36 mm within the frame (44–51% of photo height). Too close or too far from camera causes rejection.
  • Sunglasses or tinted lenses worn — sunglasses and tinted eyeglasses, including prescription tinted lenses, are not accepted.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take my Canadian passport photo at home?
No. Canada requires all passport photos — including for online renewal — to be taken in person by a commercial photographer or photo studio. The photographer must provide their name, business address, and the date the photo was taken. Home-taken photos are not accepted for any type of Canadian passport application.
What size are Canadian passport photos?
Canadian passport photos must be 50 mm wide × 70 mm tall (approximately 2×2¾ inches). Your head must be 31–36 mm from chin to crown. Two identical prints are required for paper applications. For digital online renewal, the file must be at least 1200×1800 px (JPEG, 200 KB–5 MB).
Does Canada require a guarantor to sign the photo?
Yes — for new adult passport applications (not renewals). One of your two photos must be signed on the back by your guarantor: a Canadian citizen who has known you for at least 2 years, holds a valid Canadian passport, and is not a close family member.
Are glasses allowed in Canadian passport photos?
Clear prescription glasses may be allowed if they don't cause glare and your eyes are fully visible. However, sunglasses and tinted lenses — including prescription tinted lenses — are never accepted. When in doubt, remove all eyewear.
