The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) requires the following for Australian passport photos.

DFAT requirements
- Neutral expression — mouth closed, no smiling.
- Eyes open and looking directly at the camera.
- No glasses.
- No hat or head coverings (unless for religious or medical reasons).
- No heavy shadows on face or background.
- Taken by a professional or in good conditions — not a selfie or driver's licence style.
Guarantor endorsement
For paper applications, one photo must be endorsed on the back by an Australian citizen or permanent resident who has known you for over a year. This is specific to Australia and does not affect the photo requirements themselves.
